Wedding Venue Adds Deposit For Best Man Speech That Mentions Vegas, Jail, Or The Bride’s Sister
Coordinators say the policy protects families from speeches that begin with "the statute of limitations is up."
A wedding venue has added a refundable deposit for any best man speech that mentions Vegas, jail, or the bride's sister.
The policy was introduced after several receptions were damaged by men tapping a microphone and saying "the statute of limitations is up," a phrase venue coordinators described as the sound of linens leaving the deposit.
"We are not censoring friendship," said events manager Celeste Rowland. "We are asking whether the groom's college roommate can honor the couple without reopening a 2016 Uber incident in front of grandparents and a priest."
The deposit starts at $500 and increases if the speech contains the phrases "boys will be boys," "before he became domesticated," or "I promised I would not bring this up," which staff said always means the thing is already in the room wearing cologne.
Best men may avoid the fee by submitting remarks in advance, limiting tequila intake, and proving they understand that the bride is not a reward the groom won after surviving Cancun.
Several grooms objected to the rule, saying a little danger makes speeches memorable. Venue staff replied that so does a sparkler exit, and nobody wants a deposition from that either.
The first deposit was forfeited after a best man referred to the maid of honor as "technically the first draft," ending what had been a beautiful salad course.
