Student Safety: School District Says Active Shooter Drill Counts Toward Drama Credit
Administrators praised the cross-curricular approach as rigorous, practical, and devastatingly American.
A suburban school district announced that participation in active shooter drills will now count toward drama credit, citing stage truth, blocking discipline, and ensemble listening required to crouch convincingly behind auditorium risers.
Administrators said the change reflects the district’s commitment to cross-curricular learning and to finding credits in whatever pile of national failure the students are already standing near.
“The students are demonstrating breath control, spatial awareness, and an ability to take direction under lighting conditions that would challenge any young performer,” said assistant superintendent Mark Belden. “That is theater.”
The district clarified that students cannot receive full performance credit unless they complete a written reflection on motivation, stakes, and whether the substitute teacher made the scene more or less believable by crying quietly near the AV cart.
Parents praised the policy for reducing scheduling conflicts, though several asked whether the drill could also satisfy physical education since their children had already dragged a filing cabinet in front of a door.
