Dollar General has started selling a tiny American flag designed to drape over an overdraft notice, helping customers transform bank fees into a small act of civic endurance.

The flag comes folded beside batteries, antacids, and the seasonal shelf where plastic wreaths go to learn about poverty.

"Our customers face hard moments with pride," said regional merchandising director Callie Trout. "When a bank charges \$35 because lunch happened before payday, they deserve a way to make that paper look like it died for something."

The product has become popular with shoppers who already place coupons, medical bills, and child-support envelopes under magnets shaped like eagles.

Dollar General said a larger version for student loan statements is in development, pending whether the fabric can cover a number that long without losing hope.
