It’s a question that has plagued music enthusiasts for decades: why do band’s like Blink 182 insist on mispronouncing words like “head”?
After extensive research, we have finally uncovered the answer: they just don’t give a damn.
“I mean, who cares if we say ‘yed’ instead of ‘head’? It’s not like it’s gonna change the meaning of the lyrics or anything,” said Blink 182 frontman Tom DeLonge in a recent interview.
But it’s not just DeLonge and his bandmates who are guilty of this linguistic faux pas. Other pop-punk stalwarts like Sum 41 and Green Day have also been known to butcher the English language in their songs.
But why do these bands feel the need to mangle the language in such a way? The answer, it seems, is a desire to be “edgy” and “cool.”
“Saying ‘yed’ instead of ‘head’ is like, totally punk rock, man,” said Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. “It’s like, screw the establishment, we’re gonna say whatever we want.”
But here’s the thing: mispronouncing words doesn’t make you edgy or cool. It just makes you sound like an idiot.
So to all the pop-punk bands out there: please, for the love of God, learn how to pronounce words correctly. Your fans (and the English language) will thank you
