Fans of The 1975 were left reeling today as the band’s frontman, Matt Healy, was officially cancelled following a string of controversial remarks and a recent incident at a live show where he was stopped by the band before he could utter something racist.
“It’s just not acceptable for a musician to be so openly racist,” said long-time fan, Sarah Johnson. “I mean, I thought he was just being edgy and ironic, but apparently he’s just a straight-up racist. It’s a real shame.”
The incident in question occurred at a recent concert where Healy was caught on camera attempting to say something racist, but was stopped by the band before he could finish. Healy later claimed that the comment was “just a joke,” but fans were not amused.
“I just can’t believe it,” said another fan, Jake Smith. “I thought he was one of the good ones. I guess I was wrong.”
The controversy surrounding Healy’s racist remarks comes on the heels of a string of other controversial statements made by the musician, including his stance on Black Lives Matter and his criticism of the LGBTQ+ community.
“It’s just so disappointing,” said fan Ava Rodriguez. “I mean, I knew he was a bit of a wild card, but I never thought he would go this far.”
The 1975, for their part, have yet to issue a statement on Healy’s recent behavior, but many fans are calling for the band to distance themselves from their problematic frontman.
“I just hope the band can move on from this and continue to make great music without Healy’s racist antics,” said Smith.
In the meantime, fans of The 1975 are left to mourn the loss of a once-beloved musician, and wonder just how far Healy’s racism will take him.
